problem formulation
Problem formulation is the critical first phase in any machine learning or data science project where you identify a business challenge or opportunity and translate it into a well-defined, actionable problem statement that can be solved using analytical methods. This process involves more than simply recognizing that a problem exists—it requires deeply understanding the business context, stakeholder needs, available data, success criteria, and constraints to frame the problem in a way that guides the entire project toward meaningful outcomes. A well-formulated problem clearly defines what you're trying to predict, classify, optimize, or understand, specifies measurable success metrics, identifies what data is available or needed, and sets realistic expectations about what can and cannot be achieved. For example, rather than vaguely wanting to "improve customer satisfaction," effective problem formulation would specify "predict which customers are likely to churn within the next 30 days based on their transaction history and support interactions, with the goal of achieving 80% precision to enable targeted retention campaigns." Getting problem formulation right at the outset prevents wasted effort, misaligned expectations, and solutions that technically work but fail to deliver business value.
